Bright Storybook was founded by Jill Bright-Zentmyer in 2026, out of a love for children, storytelling, and education. Beginning with Ruby the Magic Dog and the Hummingbird Rescue, Bright Storybook creates stories and companion activity books for early and independent readers that support language development, reading confidence, and fine motor skills.
The mission of Bright Storybook is to help children learn through stories that spark imagination while building strong language skills. By introducing rich vocabulary and more complex sentence structures in an engaging, age-appropriate way, Bright Storybook aims to make reading both meaningful and enjoyable.
Jill has spent 25 years teaching English language arts across the full spectrum of education: private Catholic, public charter, traditional public, and collegiate. She knows firsthand about the importance of a solid reading foundation.
Jill hopes that her stories will help parents foster a love of reading in their children and aid teachers in helping their students deepen their literacy skills.
Ruby the Magic Dog and the Hummingbird Rescue pairs with two companion activity books, so parents, homeschool families, and teachers can read together and extend the learning experience with the same story.
A storybook designed for ages 4–9, featuring bolded challenge words and a glossary to support vocabulary growth. Ideal for read-aloud time, sibling sharing, and independent reading.

A few words from parents and educators discovering Bright Storybook.
“Ruby quickly became one of those books my child wanted to read again and again. I especially liked how the story introduced new vocabulary without making the reading experience feel like a lesson. The companion activities gave us an easy way to keep the conversation going afterward.”
“The Seedlings activity book has a really nice mix of reading, tracing, coloring, and discussion. It gave us different ways to work with the story without feeling repetitive, and my child could move through the activities at their own pace.”
“I appreciate that the materials do not underestimate young readers. The vocabulary, comprehension prompts, and activities give children something meaningful to think about while still keeping the experience approachable and fun.”
Notes from the ranch, ideas for growing readers, and a look at what's coming next from Bright Storybook.
The animals, routines, and quiet moments of ranch life provide a natural setting for stories about curiosity, kindness, and working together.
Young readers are capable of understanding more language than we sometimes expect, especially when new words appear inside an engaging story.
A story can be the beginning of the learning experience rather than the end. Companion activities give children new ways to explore what they have read.
Ranch Life
August 31, 2026
Bright Storybook stories are inspired by the sense of connection that comes from spending time around animals and nature. A ranch offers children a world filled with movement, personality, unexpected moments, and opportunities to notice how living things depend on one another.
That environment fits naturally with the kinds of stories Bright Storybook wants to tell. Ruby and her friends can experience adventures that feel imaginative while still being grounded in a world children can understand and explore.
The ranch also creates opportunities to extend the experience beyond the books. Over time, Bright Storybook will share photos, videos, and updates from the animals so young readers can connect the characters and stories with the real-world setting that helped inspire them.
For families and educators, these small connections can help turn reading into something larger: a reason to ask questions, learn about animals, talk about community, and continue exploring after the story ends.
Learning Through Stories
August 31, 2026
One of Bright Storybook's goals is to help children grow comfortable with rich language while they are enjoying a story. Instead of removing every unfamiliar word, stories can give young readers a safe place to encounter new vocabulary through context, conversation, and repetition.
Ruby the Magic Dog and the Hummingbird Rescue includes challenge words throughout the story, along with a glossary to support children as they explore unfamiliar language. The goal is not to turn story time into a test. It is to let curiosity lead the learning.
A child might first hear a new word during a read-aloud, notice it again while looking through the book independently, and then encounter it in an activity or conversation later. Each interaction can make the word feel a little more familiar.
For parents, homeschool families, and educators, this creates simple opportunities to pause, ask questions, make predictions, and talk about meaning without taking away from the enjoyment of the story itself.
Reading can be playful and academically meaningful at the same time.
Behind the Books
August 31, 2026
Bright Storybook was created around the idea that stories and learning activities can work together without making reading feel like homework.
After children meet Ruby and her friends in the storybook, the companion activity books offer different ways to continue exploring the experience. Activities can encourage children to think about what happened in the story, work with vocabulary, investigate topics that sparked their curiosity, and practice age-appropriate fine motor skills.
The Seedlings companion book is designed for younger learners in Pre-K through 1st Grade, while the Saplings book provides more independent challenges for readers ages seven and older.
Families can choose the activities that make sense for their child rather than treating the book as something that must always be completed from beginning to end.
That flexibility is particularly useful for homeschool families, parents, and educators who want to adapt reading activities to a child's age, interests, and level of independence.
At Bright Storybook, the story is meant to open the door. The activities simply provide more ways to keep exploring.
“Independent publishing, thoughtfully approached.”
Jill brought Bright Storybook to life through independent self-publishing, outside traditional print-on-demand organizations. As Bright Storybook grows, she hopes to share what she has learned with other authors exploring a similar path.
If you are working on a book and would like to talk about independent self-publishing, Jill would be happy to hear from you.
